ABOUT THE ACADEMIC PLANNING UNIT

The academic planning unit of Kwara State College of Arabic & Islamic Legal Studies, Ilorin plays a crucial role in shaping the College's educational landscape, ensuring its offerings align with educational goals, industry demands, and the needs of students.

VISION: "To be a dynamic and innovative academic planning unit that drives the development of high-quality, relevant, and forward-thinking educational programmes, fostering excellence in teaching, learning, and research."

STRUCTURE OF THE ACADEMIC PLANNING

The Academic Planning Unit is an integral part of the College and headed by a Director. The Academic Planning Unit of the College is currently headed by Kamaldeen Sofiyullahi Kamaldeen.

FUNCTIONS

  1. Curriculum Development and Review:
    • Collaborate with Schools to design and update curricula that reflect current knowledge, industry trends, and best practices.
    • Incorporate interdisciplinary approaches, skills development, and experiential learning opportunities into the curriculum.
    • Preparation of academic calendar of events for College academic programmes
    • Preparation of statistical digests for student admission quota, enrolment, projection and public consumption.
    • Ensure proper registration for courses of students at specified periods.
    • Annual updating, analysis and interpretation of data for planning and preparation of the College budget.
    • Participation in College curricular revision and ensure that the College complies with the procedures and guidelines on new programme development.
    • Preparation, implementation and general review of Academic Brief for internal and external purpose.
    • Preparation, coordination, monitoring and evaluation of strategic plan and implementation.
    • Organise constant seminars, conferences, workshops in the College.
  2. Programme Accreditation and Quality Assurance:
    • Ensure that all programmes adhere to accreditation standards set by the regulating educational bodies.
    • Establish and maintain quality assurance processes to assess and improve programme effectiveness and student learning outcomes.
    • Provide close monitoring of the College Programme so as to maintain the quality of the College Programmes and effective service delivery.
    • Quality Assurance and coordination of accreditation and re-accreditation of academic programmes in line with the Minimum Academic Standards.
    • Ensure prompt release of students’ results.
    • Ensure that the Deans of Schools, Directors of Centres and Heads of Department keeps proper academic records.
    • Ensure that there is a high academic standard and good quality of teacher education programmes in the College (i.e. in the area of teaching and examination).
  3. Market Analysis and Programme Planning:
    • Conduct market research to identify emerging fields, industry demands, and student preferences.
    • Develop new academic programmes or modify existing ones based on the identified needs and trends.
    • Promote research in education through publication of journals, textbooks, handbook, etc.
    • Searching/soliciting for fellowships, scholarships, technical assistance, external aids, etc. for staff to enhance teaching research and development.
    • Work hand in hand with the College management in the area of manpower, physical facilities, relevant teaching and learning materials.
  4. Enrolment Management:
    • Collaborate with enrolment management teams to forecast student enrolment and plan for adequate Schools and resource allocation.
    • Monitor enrolment trends and adjust programme offerings as needed to maintain optimal class sizes and student-Schools ratios.
  5. Resource Allocation:
    • Allocate Schools, facilities, and other resources in alignment with programme requirements and institutional goals.
    • Optimize resource allocation to maximize efficiency and support diverse teaching and learning methodologies.
  6. Academic Innovation:
    • Stay updated with educational technology trends and innovative teaching methods.
    • Promote the integration of technology, active learning strategies, and student-centered approaches into the curriculum.
  7. Student Success Initiatives:
    • Collaborate with student support services to design initiatives that enhance student success, retention, and engagement.
    • Implement strategies to address the diverse needs and backgrounds of students.
  8. Collaboration with Industry and Community:
    • Establish partnerships with industries and community organizations to facilitate internships, research projects, and real-world learning experiences for students.
    • Ensure that programmes are aligned with the evolving needs of the job market.
    • Periodic visits to other places, tertiary institutions for first-hand information and collection of relevant academic materials
  9. Data Analysis and Reporting:
    • Collect, analyze, and interpret data related to student performance, programme outcomes, and other relevant metrics.
    • Generate reports and use data-driven insights to inform decision-making and continuous improvement efforts.
  10. Long-Term Institutional Planning:
    • Contribute to the institution's long-term strategic planning by providing insights into educational trends and potential growth areas.
    • Align academic planning with the institution's mission, vision, and overall strategic objectives.
  11. Schools Development:
    • Provide professional development opportunities for Schools to enhance their teaching skills, incorporate innovative practices, and stay updated in their fields.
  12. Interdepartmental Collaboration:
    • Collaborate with various departments within the institution, such as administration, finance, and research, to ensure seamless implementation of academic initiatives.
    • By fulfilling these functions and upholding the unit's vision, the academic planning unit contributes significantly to the institution's educational excellence, student success, and overall impact on society.
    • Preparation in conjunction with the Bursary Department of the annual recurrent budget.
  13. Ad-hoc duties as assigned by the provost.
